How does God respond to our separation from him? Colossians 1:13-14 says “He has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son [Jesus], who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.” God is on a mission to rescue people from destruction, but he must value both justice and mercy in the process:
God is fair, so our sin must be punished; but he is also merciful so, in Romans 3:25 it says that “God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins... We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed His blood, sacrificing His life for us.” This is incredible because no other god has died for our sin, and no other god has risen from the dead!
Why would God suffer and die for us? Ephesians 1:5 beautifully describes God's heart. It says that “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.” God loves us so much he offers us a relationship with him that is based on his love, not our performance! (Romans 5:8; Ephesians 2:8-9) What are your thoughts and feelings about Jesus suffering for your sins and offering you a personal relationship with God?
